Griptape is a pain in the ass---well, I should say, removing griptape is a pain in the ass, depending on the tape. Before I can start tracing out a board shape and get to the bandsaw, I have to remove the tape. Here are a few examples of what tape can do when trying to remove it. Clearly the left and middle are what you hope all tape to be like, but unfortunately they mostly end up like the one on the right---coming off in little bits and pieces. Don't want to sound like I'm complaining, just sharing part of the process.
